With proper setup and technique, you should be able to start your fire easily. To make sure you suceed in starting your fire, make sure you follow these steps and tips.
Tinder Setup Maybe the most import step is getting the right tinder to start the fire with. Dry, light, fluffy tinder works best like dry grass, leaves, and small strips of bark. Cotton balls also work very well. Putting petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on the a cotton ball is very good tinder because it is easy to ignite and will burn a long time using the petroleum jelly as a fuel. You can prepare these in advance and store them in a plastic bag or container. You can also use your your striker or a knife to shave your rod in the tinder. The shavings in the tinder will ignite when contacted by the sparks helping set flame to the tinder.
Igniting the Tinder Place your flint rod close to your tinder. Taking your striker, strike the rod downwards. Hot sparks will shoot out and should set fire to your tinder. Keep the tinder protected from the winds and slowly add more tinder and wood building up your fire.
